Tripod Wind Turbine; Improving design and maintenance

Akselos is pleased to announce its success in a new project with Trung Nam Group to improve the design and maintenance of tripod wind turbine foundations in South Vietnam, with approval from auditors and independent experts from DNV.

Trung Nam Group (TNG), the biggest renewable energy group in Vietnam, worked with APECO, DNV and Siemens Gamesa to improve the design and maintenance of its tripod tripod wind turbine project, and brought Akselos onto the project in 2021 to model the foundations.

Tripod wind turbine foundations are typically more challenging than monopole or jacket wind turbine foundations but are designed to withstand deeper water and more challenging conditions.

The foundation was initially modelled using conventional Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, but due to the design and codecheck required, Akselos was brought on board to apply its advanced simulation technology to look at the structures in more detail and in near real-time.

Using its hybrid solver, which cannot be undertaken using any other software, Akselos helped TNG pass DNV’s code check and fatigue analysis, meaning the foundations are forecast to be operational for around 20 years.

“We are delighted with the results we’ve seen with Akselos’ hi-tech simulation platform, which provides a true step-change in our design process. With their high-fidelity models, we’ve been able to complete the Tripod foundation design stage, which was already reviewed and audited by Siemen Gamesa and DNV.

“This is especially important for conducting further in-depth research and perfecting the design calculation for the life of the asset while representing a significant reduction and saving; providing substantial value for us and wider stakeholders.”

Thomas Leurent, CEO of Akselos

“As technology pioneers, Akselos is at the forefront of innovation and making moves in new markets. Working with Trung Nam Group is an excellent example of where our technology can really make a difference in emerging markets.

“Using our technology on tripod foundations is a challenge we were excited to accept. Having worked with DNV previously, it is a testament to our working relationship and their confidence in our technology.

“Receiving DNV approval for our work on the Tripod project with TNG and APECO will help lead the way for new designs for offshore tripod wind turbine projects across the world and is something we are excited to be part of.”

Akselos is experienced in providing digital twin technology that allows near real-time modelling of large and complex assets, allowing some of the world’s most critical infrastructure to be designed and monitored more efficiently, using a combination of AI and traditional physics-based approaches to computational monitoring.

Through an EU-backed wind foundation design project with Lamprell, a leading provider of services to the international energy sector, Akselos recently proved that its technology can help reduce the steel weight and associated costs of offshore jackets by up to 30 percent. It is hoped that similar results can be achieved using Akselos’ technology on tripod wind turbine foundations.
