Inauguration Ceremony for GIBE III Hydroelectric Power Plant

Dongfang Electric announced the grand inauguration ceremony for GIBE III – the largest hydroelectric power plant that DEC has ever contracted overseas.

With the largest total capacity (1870 MW) of hydroelectric equipment ever exported by China, GIBE III is the largest hydroelectric power plant under construction in Africa, as well as the largest power project in Ethiopia. Thus its commissioning is highly valued by both Chinese government and Ethiopian government. It was inaugurated by Mr. Hailemariam Desalegn, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. La Yifan, the Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia and Mr. Zhu Yuanchao, the Vice-president of DEC, and the ceremony was attended by over 1000 personnel been working for it.

At the ceremony, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn awarded the GIBE III Hydroelectric Power Plant Plaque to DEC for its consistent effort over the last 5 years and great contribution to success of the project. He gave an inspiring speech, claiming that GIBE III will promote the economic development greatly by providing 90% of the electricity for the Capital Addis Ababa.

Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia La Yifan pointed out in his speech that GIBE III is the beacon for turning East Africa’s water tower into power tower and also a proof of Chinese design and contract ability in hydroelectric area. As a world-class hydroelectric enterprise, DEC makes not only profit from GIBE III, but also a Chinese brand and glory for China. More and more high-qualified projects like GIBE III will be constructed for the countries along “One Belt and One Road Initiative” of China to achieve reciprocity and mutual benefit.
